the-visual-cortex
Welcome
to 'The Visual Cortex.' Not an online newspaper, not just a web log.
Visual information on news and sports from the West Hertfordshire and
South Bedfordshire area as well as photographic features. As it's an
image-based site, I'll try and post some photographic tips and technical
information too.
My
name is Jim Garnett, a photojournalist and videographer with roughly
thirty years experience. I began freelancing for the Evening Post Echo
and other local newspapers in my area before turning professional in
1985. During my time working in Hamilton and Toronto in Canada I won
five 'News Picture of the Year' awards.
I
shoot with Nikon digital SLR [D-SLR] professional camera bodies. For
news I use the D2X and D2Xs and for sport I use the D2H and D2Hs bodies
as they give me a higher speed [8fps] but the trade-off is smaller
files. But that's not a problem for most applications. For news I shoot
with the Nikkor 12-24mm, 24-120mm, 70-200mm and 300mm lenses. For sport I
shoot with the Nikkor 200mm and 500mm lenses, also sometimes using the
Nikkor range [1.4X, 1.7X and 2X] of teleconverters.
Over
the past decade, we've witnessed the demise of many newspapers and the
degrading of content. Is the answer online content? Clearly, only if
it's supported by local and regional advertisers. This site might become
your source of local news and sports images...

You can also contact me at this email address if you are a photographer who wants to be mentored. Of course, it is unlikely I can directly mentor at most news events but I will be able to mentor at most sports events.
